The Wisdom of Wombats: A Journey to Create a Vibe for the Tribe

Mrs Angela Bransden1, Nicole Barron1

1THS North, Launceston, Australia

Since 2019 Wombat Ward at the Launceston General Hospital has been on a journey of radical reset and cultural change whilst in the midst of a rebuild, pandemic and devastating incidents impacting us and our community.

Completion of the paediatric inpatient rebuild in 2020 was a watershed moment with a new unit and new team we set about personal and professional recovery, resilience, through building capability and capacity and implementing a positive cultural change.

Our journey beyond unexpected trauma and our ongoing rebuilding and implementing of cultural change, models of care, improving collaboration, and the benefit of a shared leadership and decision making to positively influence change.

Ensuring the vibe of the tribe was the instrumental in our journey with the foundation being the values that were collaboratively developed by the whole team.

These values have guided us in communication and are embedded in recruiting processes, clinical practice, education, accountability, and governance.

Team values were agreed upon in early 2022 were:

  • Teamwork/ Collaboration
  • Adaptability
  • Kindness
  • Striving for excellence
  • Making a difference
  • Optimism (Being positive)

These outcomes are the foundation for future focus, planning and collaboration, to create aspirational opportunities for staff and the community when engaging in our service.
